How Much Exercise Do Cats and Dogs Need Each Day?

Cats and dogs need daily exercise to stay alert, happy, and healthy. If your pet isn’t getting enough daily exercise and attention, his physical and mental health will suffer. But how do you know if your pet is getting enough exercise? If you’re in doubt, it’s always best to make an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination and health check-up. In general, these are the recommended guidelines for daily exercise levels for cats and dogs.

Daily Exercise for Cats

Your cat’s daily exercise needs will depend on his age, breed, temperament, weight, diet, and overall health. In general, cats need about 30 minutes of exercise every day. They can get that exercise from playtime with humans or other pets, or by exploring play structures like cat trees in the home. You can also take your cat for a short daily walk on a leash if he will tolerate it, or give him supervised play time in your yard.

Daily Exercise for Dogs

Like cats, the amount of exercise your dog needs each day will depend on his age, size, weight, breed, personality, and health. Most dogs should get between 30 minutes and two hours of exercise a day. Active, large-breed dogs will need more exercise, while many smaller breeds will need less. Dogs that are obese, overweight, elderly, or at risk of health conditions should be evaluated by a veterinarian before changes are made to their diet or exercise routine.

How to Increase Your Pet’s Activity Levels

You can increase your cat’s daily activity levels by using interactive cat toys like wand toys, food puzzles, battery operated toys, and toys with catnip or treats in them. You can also set up a cat tree, scratching posts, or exercise wheel in your home. You can make sure your dog gets enough exercise every day by taking him on daily walks or runs, taking him to the dog park or on a play date, playing fetch in the house or yard, and playing with dog toys.

If you’re not sure if your pet is getting enough physical and mental stimulation each day, make an appointment with your veterinarian for a check-up.
