Your Guide to Senior Pet Health

You may not have realized it, but as your pet gets older, their veterinary care needs will change. Just like humans, our pets experience different medical needs as they age. Here’s a look at some of the ways your pet’s veterinary care needs will change as they enter their golden years.

Energy and Exercise

One of the big changes you’ll see in your pet as they age is a decrease in their activity level. They may not be able to run and play like they used to and may even start to sleep more. This is normal! As your pet’s metabolism slows down, they will have less energy. It’s important to continue giving them daily exercise, even if it’s just a short walk around the block. This will help keep their muscles strong and joints limber.

Weight Management

It’s not uncommon for pets to gain weight as they age. Just like humans, animals can become less active with age and begin to gain weight. This is especially true if their diet stays the same. To help your pet maintain a healthy weight, talk to your veterinarian about switching to a senior formula food.

Vision and Hearing Loss

As your pet enters their senior years, you may notice they are having trouble seeing and hearing. Just like humans, our pets can experience vision and hearing loss as they age. If you notice your pet is having trouble seeing or hearing, make an appointment with your veterinarian. They can help determine if the loss is due to age or another underlying condition.

Dental Care

It’s important to continue taking care of your pet’s teeth as they age. This means regular brushing and yearly dental check-ups. Dental disease is one of the most common health problems in senior pets. Bacteria from the plaque and tartar on their teeth can enter their bloodstream and cause other health problems.

If you have any concerns about your pet’s health, make an appointment with your veterinarian. They can help you create a personalized care plan for your furry friend.
